Cold Chain Process Monitoring

Compute Mean Kinetic Temperature (MKT) for the storage or transit of perishable food.

Understanding Mean Kinetic Temperature (MKT)

“Mean kinetic temperature: A single derived temperature that, if maintained over a defined period of time, affords the same thermal challenge to a drug substance or drug product as would be experienced over a range of both higher and lower temperatures for an equivalent defined period. The mean kinetic temperature is higher than the arithmetic mean temperature and takes into account the Arrhenius equation.”

Mean Kinetic Temperature (MKT) is one of the most important parameters in storing or transporting food and pharmaceutical products. As temperature rises, the activity of spores and microorganisms increases, meaning even small excursions above recommended limits can negatively impact product safety and quality.

The monitoring challenge

Simplifying MKT Calculation with G-Tek Solutions

MKT is a mathematical concept with a complex formula, but G-Tek simplifies this process. Its LmView software, used with the LM series of data loggers, can compute MKT instantly with a single click. The software is optionally 21CFR Part 11 compliant. The LM series includes three models:

  • LmTransit – single-use for transporting food and drugs
  • LM-Temperature – reusable logger with internal/external sensors
  • LM-RH – for simultaneous temperature and humidity monitoring

MKT is also a built-in feature in G-Tek’s client-server software, gtekNet.
Pharmaceuticals, Food, and Beverage industries benefit greatly from these advanced instruments and software solutions.
